The Brief

A commanding and prestigious lobby redesign for MIT — conceived to make a powerful first impression while communicating the institution's values of excellence, innovation, and credibility. The double-height space is designed to feel grand yet approachable, welcoming students, faculty, and visitors with equal confidence.

Reception desk

A sweeping curved white reception counter with a fluted oak front panel sits at the centre of the lobby — clean, modern, and authoritative. Its generous scale anchors the space without dominating it.

Feature wall & display

A dramatic textured stone panel wall behind the reception, spot-lit from above, serves as the visual centrepiece. Flanking display niches with blue accent frames showcase institutional certificates, trophies, and awards — a proud record of achievement.

Waiting area & finishes

Sculptural bouclé lounge chairs in cream and terracotta sit on a richly patterned terrazzo-stripe marble floor — adding warmth and texture to the otherwise monumental space. Floor-to-ceiling glazing floods the lobby with natural daylight.

The palette of cool grey marble, dark timber ceiling, warm oak, and institutional blue creates a lobby that feels both serious and welcoming — a space that honours the institution's heritage while projecting a forward-looking design sensibility. Fully visualized in Enscape for photorealistic 3D presentation.
